As an anime blogger, it can be hard to figure out which shows will be successful in the coming anime season, and which will be dropped quickly by fans and forgotten. I’m already having trouble keeping up with a few shows, like Rail Romanesque, which turned me off with its short format and CGI animation, Burn the Witch, which has a cool concept of people living in a “reverse” version of London, but I disliked the CGI dragon battles, and even Tokikaku Kawaii, which got off to a great start, but the second episode nearly put me to sleep. One show I was immediately impressed with was Kamisama ni Natta Hi, or The Day I Became a God, which I’ll write about today!
A boy named Youta Narukami is playing basketball to take his mind off his entrance exams when he meets a strange girl wearing a sort of Gothic Lolita nun outfit named Hina, who declares herself to be the God of Omniscience, Odin. He figures she’s just a girl experiencing chunibyo delusions and tries to help her get home, but she hits him with a surprising declaration: that the world will end in 30 days.
Youta naturally assumes Hina is joking or delusional, but as time goes by he realizes that she does seem to be able to predict the future, such as when the rain will suddenly fall, and which horses will win in horse racing, and even which pitches will come in a game of baseball. When she grants him a single wish, he asks that he be able to win the heart of Izanagi, his childhood friend, and crush, and attend the same university as her…despite being told that the world will end before that can come to pass.
The Day I Became a God is an Original Anime by Jun Maeda
Since it’s written by Key’s Jun Maeda, the genius writer behind Air, Kanon, Clannad, Angel Beats! and Charlotte, it’s likely an instant-watch for most fans, as well it should be. But not only has Maeda-sensei given us some of the best-loved stories over the past two decades, but he’s also composed mostly of the best songs from these works, the ones that stop fans in their tracks and fill their eyes with tears remembering the saddest moments in anime or the songs that still make our hearts soar even after all these years. The man is one of Japan’s national treasures, and you should watch The Day I Became a God to ensure you don’t miss out on what might prove to be the anime of the season.
Hina is an Adorable Character
When I first saw the Hina, she reminded me a little bit of Index from A Certain Magical Index, which gave me pause as Index is probably my least favorite anime character ever. Happily, the omniscient god Hina is adorable, and all her scenes are well-written, which won me over quickly.
She’s also voiced by talented voice actress Ayane Sakura, who does the voices of Iroha from Oregairu, so that helps me love her a lot.
One anime I’ll totally be watching this season is #KamisamaniNattaHi, aka #TheDayIBecameaGod, which is an original anime by Jun Maeda.
