Back in 2015, iconic Soul Eater manga author Atsushi Ookubo launched a brand new manga by the name of Enen no Shouboutai, or Fire Force as it would later be called overseas. While it wasn’t an immediate worldwide hit, tides turned for the fire-fighting action series when a 2019 anime adaptation turned the overlooked manga series into a massively popular hit. Fans have been clamoring for more ever since the first season of the anime wrapped up late last year. Now, the wait is almost over, as a new trailer has dropped for season 2 of Fire Force that confirms the continuation will be broadcasting globally this July.
Season two sees our titular protagonists of the Fire Force setting out to take down the cruel Evangelist in order to make sure that the Great Cataclysm doesn’t have a chance of happening again. The story of this season picks up right after the end of the first, with plenty of returning characters like Shinra, Arthur, Tamaki. The new trailer shows our heroes off in action, as well as a snippet of the new opening theme song from Aimer titled ‘SPARK-AGAIN.’
The new trailer for season two of Fire Force also gives us a look at some new characters, including Kasugatani Inka. Voiced by Miyuri Shimabukuro, Inka is a thrill-seeker who’s always looking for some kind of action. She’s made a habit out of showing up at the sites of spontaneous combustions to loot them for goods, but one day her latent powers awaken after she experiences a particular incident.
The Fire Force anime follows the story of the original Ohkubo manga, which is published by Kodansha Comics in English. Kodansha describes the story as follows:
Terror has paralyzed the clockwork metropolis of Tokyo! Possessed by demons, people have begun to burst into flame, leading to the establishment of a special firefighting team: the Fire Force, ready to roll on a moment’s notice to fight spontaneous combustion anywhere it might break out. The team is about to get a very unique addition: Shinra, a boy who possesses the unique power to run at the speed of a rocket, leaving behind the famous “devil’s footprints” (and destroying his shoes in the process). Can the Fire Force discover the source of this strange phenomenon and put a stop to it? Or will the city burn to ashes first?
Alongside a returning cast of characters, much of the animation staff from the first season of Fire Force is returning for this continuation. Tatsumi Minakawa, the director on episode 12 of the first season, is set to replace Yuki Yase as the overall director for season two. Minakawa will also be supervising scripts for the new season. Yumenosuke Tokuda will be working alongside Yoshio Kosakai as chief animation director, and Hideyuki Morioka is set to return as character designer. Neito Miyazato, Hiroyuki Ohkaji, and Tsutomu Matsuura serve as main animators on the new season. Kazunori Miyazato, meanwhile, joins returning staff member Yoshito Takamine as art director. CGI direction was handled by Daisuke Kusaka in season one, but he’s being replaced by Shin’ya Takano for season two.
Other assorted returning staff members for season two of Fire Force include Kazuhiro Miwa as chief animator, Naoko Satou as color designer, Yousuke Motoki as director of photography, Ryo Ohashi for VFX, Kiyoshi Hirose as editor, Jin Aketagawa as sound director, and Kenichiro Suehiro as music composer.
