Forget the Marvel-verse… I want to enter the Monogatari-verse!
In an update posted to their official blog on March 2nd, Funimation revealed the next batch of Aniplex titles which are now available on the streaming platform: five different Monogatari series!
Here’s a breakdown of each series that was added to their catalog on March 3rd, listed in the recommended viewing order:
Bakemonogatari
The first anime series in the Monogatari franchise premiered in 2009 and ran for fifteen episodes (including the three which were only released on home video). In this first series, we meet the protagonist Koyomi Araragi, who had his life saved by a strange man named Oshino and a female vampire. Throughout the run of the series, Koyomi meets girls who have spiritual problems that must be solved with the help of Oshino.
Nisemonogatari
It’s possible that even if you’ve never seen a Monogatari series before, you’re already aware of this one due to one infamous scene involving a toothbrush.
In this season, which was released in 2012, Koyomi must protect his younger sisters from the dangers that lurk in the world as they attempt to figure out the cause of all the spiritual problems that their brother encounters.
Nekomonogatari Black
The focus of this series is a girl that Koyomi has known for years named Hanekawa who constantly appears with a bandage on her face. After learning what is going on in her home, Koyomi also finds out that she has been possessed by a dangerous cat spirit that must be removed.
Monogatari Second Season
Originally airing in 2013, Koyomi has entered a new school term with the girls in his life but, in this season, the spiritual problems plaguing them are much harder to deal with.
Owarimonogatari
Taking place in Koyomi’s third year of high school, this season introduces a new character named Ougi Oshino who has discovered a room in the school that was never supposed to exist. It hides a story that was never meant to be told.
