Following the last translated commentary from the performers of the film’s main theme, Omoinotake, crew members of Twittering Birds Never Fly -the clouds gather- have given their thoughts on the final product after test screenings on February 13th. The film is based on Yoneda Kou’s Boy’s Love series of the same name. Yoneda-sensei was all in attendance during the test screening and gave their own thoughts.
Yoneda Kou (Original Author): “I cried when I finished watching it. You can feel a great sense of loneliness coming from the film. I can tell there was a lot of care and appreciation of the original comic when transiting it from print to screen.”
Kaori Makita (Director): “We’re so close to the theatrical release and it doesn’t even feel real, yet. The entire cast, crew, and artists have cherished the atmosphere of the original. We’ve challenged ourselves alongside Yashiro (the main character) since the beginning, and put lots of thought into this work. I hope that everyone who loves the manga and those being introduced for the first time will be able to look forward to Yashiro’s story now, and in the future together. I’d like to thank everyone for their support of this film.”
Hiroshi Seko (Screenplay): “There is something about himself that Yashiro keeps hidden in the depths of his heart. It’s terribly complex, complicated, and never vocalized. These kinds of feelings are in our heart of hearts (subjective or otherwise). I think that’s why many readers are fascinated by Yashiro and this series. Much like Yashiro to Domeki (the main love interest), this series is irresistible.
H ZETTRIO (Music): “Even though I’m a musician, the sound of pianos make me nervous. Yet I was drawn to it. There was a great sense of atmosphere and tone created from each scene. Really, it was captivating. The scene and music blend nicely thanks to the sense of beauty that holds it all together.” – H ZETT M (piano)

Scenes with Yashiro and Domeki were so shocking that I was ashamed of my limited insight into the culture of the original subject matter. “Interactions between all the characters were very nerve-wracking. Yet there is a feeling of refreshment after it’s over for some reason (laughs). Twittering Birds Never Fly -the clouds gather- tells the first arc of a high-ranking yazuka leader with an unsatisfiable sexual appetite for masochism, often using his staff to fulfill himself. Everything seems normal for him until his higher-ups assign a new bodyguard incapable of sexual arousal. Come to find out, they both have scared personalities that stems from intense trauma in their younger years and family relations.
The film will be released in Japan on February 15th. Stay tuned for J-LIST’s review! The manga is still ongoing with six volumes currently. The first three are available in English from JUNE manga.
