There are some universal things that anime fans seem to love. Complaining that anime has too many isekai, harem and idol series, despite there being plenty of innovative alternatives to choose from each season. Debating who the “best girl” is in a given show or season, and trashing others’ choices. But they also love to obsess over-tanned and dark-skinned anime girls, and I often get into deep discussions with fans on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram about which one is best.

Why Are Dark-Skinned Anime Girls so Popular?
So let’s look at the most beloved dark-skinned anime girls, as suggested by J-List customers, and try to understand why they’re so popular!
Hibiki Sakura
One popular genre of character in anime these days is the “gal” (gyaru), those super-cute girls who wear flamboyant fashions and often tan their bodies. Naturally, Japanese ero companies take advantage of this trend.
Uruka Takemoto
One reason characters have dark complexions is that to show that they’re “sports-kei” characters, like Takemoto from Bokuben. Those tanlines drive fans crazy, this one included.
Chacha Azaka
Often dark-skinned anime girls are created to generate an air of foreign-ness for the target audience, as with he sexy Chaha from Maken-Ki!, who comes from an unnamed foreign country and is half-Japanese.
Mito Ikumi
Another popular tanned anime character is “Nikumi-senpai” (Meat Senpai) from Shokugeki no Soma, who is Japanese yet is based on a genre of character called Yankee, sort of tough street gangs who got their nickname from their tendency to dye their hair blonde.
Azusa Nakano in Summer
Fans when so wild when Azusa got a deep suntan in the beach episode in the first season of K-On! that they had to do it again in season 2.
Nadia of the Mysterious Seas
Before Hideki Anno made Evangelion he made Nadia, the story of a dark-skinned girl who turns out to be of the ancient race of Atlantis. It’s a quality series that all Anno fans should be sure and watch. It’s loaded with Miyazaki and Yamato gags, too.
Yao Ro Dushi
There are so many dark elves in anime, I should probably write a post just about this topic. There’s even a male stress toy available, if you feel the need to pick one up.
Umiko Ahagon
While many dark-skinned anime girls are defined as coming from a generic 南国 nangoku, literally meaning “a country to the south [of Japan],” Umiko specifically comes from Okinawa, a group of islands with a culture and language related to but separate from the rest of Japan. Umiko a computer programmer with latent lesbian tendencies who loves military gear.
D’Arc Hoshino
There’s nothing like a dark-skinned anime maid who has a special surprise for us!
Chloe von Einzbern
One of the most popular dark-skinned characters, Chloe von Einzbern (or Kuro as she’s nicknamed), she needs to recharge her mana by engaging in “yuri tonsil hockey” with Illya or other characters, which fans love for reasons.
Akane Kowata
Another popular dark-skinned anime girl is Akane from Flying Witch, a feel-good series about witches inhabiting the Tohoku region of Japan.
Urd
A literal goddess, Urd is at the top of many fans’ list of the best dark-skinned anime characters. Is she on your list?
Bonus character: Brock from Pokemon!
Considering the huge number of tanned or dark anime characters, it’s likely we left one of your favorites off. Post your favorite character in the comments below, or tell us on Twitter!
