One reason I enjoy anime is that it’s not just one genre but many different ones, and no matter how often fans complain about there being too many harem, isekai and moe shows each season, there are always fresh ideas to entertain us. One series I’m enjoying this season is Sounan Desu Ka?, aka Are You Lost? It’s an anime title based on a pun, meaning “Is that so?” but also meaning “Is it true that we’ve been marooned on a desert island?” Japanese puns don’t fool around.
In the show, four girls wake up on a beach after surviving a shipwreck. They include a useless rich girl, a super-smart girl with glasses, a “sports musume” who’s good at athletic stuff, plus… A “survival pro” who has been marooned on desert islands with her father many times before, so she knows what to do to survive. Like how many days a human can go without eating or drinking, at what point dehydration will result in the body’s functions shutting down, and how to safely extract moisture by drinking the blood of a fish, which naturally disgusts the other girls.
I love it when anime teaches us something useful even as it entertains us, like the way Yuru Camp dispenses useful advice on how to properly set up a campfire, pitch a tent and how to keep warm while camping in the winter. While Sounan Desu Ka? is mostly a vehicle for yuri comedy fan service — which is probably why I like it — it also contains some potentially useful information, like which parts of a locust to eat if you ever find yourself starving on an island with a bunch of cute anime girls. While Tejina-Senpai offers fanservice that’s a lot more visual, this show works hard to create ridiculously sexy situations to entertain fans. So far, I’m liking it a lot.
