One series that I’ve always been a little bummed about, because it come out before my time, is the anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s first hit series Urusei Yatsura. While I’m admittedly not a huge fan of Takahashi’s works, this is one series that I’ve always wanted to at least give a chance to but could never because of the original adaptation from the 1980s being unavailable legally and thus pushing it further and further down my priority list.
The good news is that the series is getting a brand new re-adaptation of the manga. The better news is that we have all the details thanks to a brand new promotional video which went live early on Thursday, May 19th!
Alright, ready for all the details? Here we go…
The brand new anime adaptation will begin airing for four cours on the beloved Noitamina animation block, starting in October 2022. David Production is handling the animation with Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura, both serving as directors for the series. Yuuko Kakihara will pen the series composition with Naoyuki Asano serving as the primary character designer and Masaru Yokoyama composing the background music.
In this romantic comedy, the story involves an alien race invading Earth. Rather than taking them over with brute force, however, the aliens give humanity a fighting chance by challenging one random resident of Earth (who happens to be a hapless Japanese teenage boy) to a game of tag against the beautiful daughter of the invading force, Lum. After winning the game, Lum misinterprets the hero’s victory speech as a proposal of marriage and accepts the offer on live television. Thus begins the madcap antics of these characters and their friends.
As mentioned, Urusei Yatsura is a remake of one of Takahashi’s earliest works, so I’m very curious to see how well the jokes have aged or if anything will need to be updated to meet modern standards of humor and decency.
