Oh wacky isekai, how you slay me.
In the latest twist on the genre that just keeps on giving, we have the upcoming summer 2022 series Uncle from Another World. In this series, the twist isn’t that it takes place in a fantasy world at all. Instead, the story takes place in modern Japan with the hero being your average Japanese teenager. Ready for the twist? Seventeen years ago, our hero’s uncle fell into a coma but has recently woken up only to reveal that while he was comatose in this world, he was fighting as a hero in a fantasy world and has returned to this world with magical powers.
The cast stars Takehito Koyasu as the uncle and Jun Fukuyama as the teenager, Takafumi.
Originally a manga series created by Hotondoshindeiru and launched in June 2018, the series is up to seven volumes in Japan as of February 2022. Uncle From Another World is being published in English by Yen Press with four volumes released in the west as of January 2022.
The anime adaptation will be produced by studio Atelier Pontdarc with Shigeki Kawai sitting in the director’s chair. He’ll be working off scripts written by Kenta Ihara and character designs provided by Kazuhiro Ota.
Uncle From Another World has my attention for the moment. Yes, most of us are sick of isekai, but every so often another one comes along that is willing to do something different. The only real downside to this series that I see so far is that it’s going to be quite steeped in otaku humor, which will make it harder for new fans to wrap their heads around.
Regardless, Uncle From Another World seems like it could be fun and worth checking out when it premieres this summer. If you’re not totally sick of isekai, that is.
