In an announcement that hit the internet late at night on Wednesday, May 18th, Crunchyroll revealed that, in cooperation with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International, they will release the brand new Makoto Shinkai movie Suzume no Tajimari (working title) around the world (excluding Asia) in early 2023!
In this movie (the 13th from Shinkai), the main character is a teenage girl named Suzume who, by chance, meets a young man who is searching for a door. When they find the specific door that the man is looking for up in the mountains, Suzume opens the door and begins a chain reaction. “Doors of Disaster” start appearing all over Japan, which starts a series of disasters. After that point, Suzume must travel all over Japan to close and lock each of these “Doors of Disaster” in order to stop the chain that she accidentally started.
In terms of the crew, Makoto Shinkai is, once again, handling the bulk of the work as they credit him as the director and writer. The animation is being produced by his studio CoMix Wave Films and character designs are being provided by Masayoshi Tanaka.
The movie will open in Japan on November 11th, 2022, but they have revealed no exact release dates for any countries or regions outside of Japan, but stay tuned for more information as it is released.
Much like another famous director, Mamoru Hosoda (Belle), I have a weird relationship with the works of Shinkai. After his earliest works (5cm Per Second and Voices of a Distant Star in particular) didn’t really strike a chord with me, I didn’t seek out Shinkai’s later works, which is an enormous gap in my personal anime database.
With any luck, this latest movie will screen at a theater near me and I’ll be able to find out everything that I’m missing out on.
