Sand Land the Series premiered a few days ago. This is a retelling of the movie adaptation we all saw and enjoyed in August. The tale of a demon aiding humans to save a water-parched land premiered in part on March 20th. In case you missed them, there is a trailer and the creditless ending theme to enjoy.
Sand Land began as a short story Akira Toriyama thought of that merely entertained him. Shueisha published the series from May 22nd, 2000, to August 28th, 2000, and released a single volume.
Our unlikely heroes are as follows:
- Beelzebub — Mutsumi Tamura (Renly from Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld). The son of Lucifer and the prince of demons. He joins the humans to save Sand Land simply because he is bored.
- Rao — Kazuhiro Yamaji (Henry Henderson from Spy × Family). An elderly man who works to free the land from the greedy king’s machinations.
- Thief — Cho (Jaken from Inuyasha). A skilled thief Beelzebub hired to help them. He occasionally argues with Beelzebub for turns to drive the tank.
Studio Bones has maintained a home page and a Twitter (X) page to promote Sand Land. You can find additional series information and the Key Visuals there.
The Sun-Baked Territory of Sand Land
Sand Land is a very apt title for the series. The land has been stricken by drought for as long as anyone can remember. The king holds sway over the land because he controls what little water remains. But it’s not just the humans who suffer because of the king’s greed. The demons suffer from thirst too. Beelzebub, the demon prince, steals just enough water for his fellow demons to survive. He teams up with Rao, a man with his own secrets, to free the land from the king’s greed.
Sand Land Film and Anime Series
There are some differences between the film and anime series. Some are minor, but others are quite significant. However, there’s no need for alarm or concern, since everything was approved by Akira Toriyama. In fact, he penned those very differences himself.
- The first half of the series comprises the “Akuma no Oji” arc and retells the movie’s events with new scenes.
- The second half of the series comprises the new “Tenshi no Yusha” arc which Toriyama wrote himself.
- Akira Toriyama named these arcs and both named and illustrated the new characters.
- The new character Ann (Mikako Komatsu — Yutaka Shinozaki from My Tiny Senpai) joins Beelzebub on his adventures in Forest Land.
- The new character Muniel (Ayumu Murase — Kotetsu in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) is an angel and self-proclaimed heroine of Forest Land.
