The Evangelion franchise has been all over the news lately. From Netflix rescuing the series for streaming (before dooming it to obscurity again by releasing it all at once), to GKIDS obtaining the home video and theatrical rights to the original television series and movies/OVAs (who saw that coming?!), to me killing the rumor that the final Rebuild of Evangelion movie would (thankfully) NOT be six hours long, there’s been a lot of Evangelion to digest lately… and here’s some more for you.
In an announcement that hit the news wires on Monday, October 12th, Studio Khara revealed that the first three Rebuild of Evangelion movies are going to get an MX4D/4DX theatrical re-screening throughout the month of December in Japan. The first movie, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, will be released on December 4th. It will be followed by the second movie, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, on December 11th. Finally, the month will wrap up with Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo on December 18th, with all three movies ending their run on December 24th. Perhaps just in time for a Christmas miracle/release date for the final movie?
Neon Genesis Evangelion has been an anime mainstay for over two decades now. The theme song constantly rates at the top of all-time favorite charts and many fans around the world will still debate the nuances and metaphors found within the original television series and rebuild movies to this day.
The final Rebuild of Evangelion movie, which is titled Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was originally scheduled to be released in June 2020 but was delayed to an unknown later date due to the worldwide pandemic causing production issues. Studio Khara recently tweeted that they are working hard on the movie and hope to have more information soon, which has fans of the franchise on the edge of their seats waiting with bated breath. Let’s just hope that when the final movie is finally released, fans’ patience will be rewarded.
