The upcoming spring 2020 season will deliver some heavy hitters vying for your attention, including this series, which takes place in 16th century Italy!
Based on the manga titled Arte, created by Kei Okubo, this series will be very different from what we’re used to meaning that it’s not a school series nor is it an isekai. Instead, this is a period piece taking place in the Renaissance era of Italy with a female lead from a noble family who just wants to become an artist. Unfortunately in this era, art is a man’s profession which means that our leading lady, cleverly named Arte, will face resistance, discrimination, and persecution every step of the way, but still she pushes forward towards her dream with a positive attitude.
As seen in the promotional video, the cast, crew, theme song artists, and premiere date have all been sorted out. The series will premiere on April 4th, 2020, and will feature an opening theme song sung by Maaya Sakamoto (which is previewed in the above promotional video starting at around the one minute mark) and a closing theme sung by Kiyono Yasuno.
Also revealed in the promotional video, we now know that the cast will feature:
- Arte: Mikako Komatsu
- Leo: Katsuyuki Konishi
- Angelo: Junya Enoki
- Veronica: Sayaka Ohara
- Yuri: Kousuke Toriumi
- Catalina: M.A.O.
- Dacha: Kiyono Yasuno
In terms of the crew, the animation will be produced by studio Seven Arcs with Takayuki Hamana sitting in the director’s chair. Reiko Yoshida is handling the scripts and Goro Ito is handling the background music.
I am personally very excited to watch this series when Arte premieres in April, mostly because it is so different from everything else we have been getting lately. It’s rare that a period piece set outside of Japan gets made and so I encourage everyone to check out this series and support it for as long as you can so we can see more series like this getting produced.
