How much do you love Nissin cup noodles? I mean, I know how much I love cup noodles (a lot, alright. I like them a lot) but I don’t know if I love them this much. Japan has never been afraid to push culinary boundaries and break all the rules when it comes to their snack foods, but… this is a new high (or low depending on your point of view).
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beloved snack food, Nissin has decided in their infinite wisdom to give you four flavors of cup noodle in a way that no one has ever considered before, as a soda pop. Yeah, you heard of me. The four flavors that are available to pre-order now are Cup Noodle Soda, Cup Noodle Seafood Soda, Cup Noodle Curry Soda, and Cup Noodle Chili Tomato Soda.
If you’re wondering what these could possibly taste like, they included some helpful descriptions in the original announcement posted to the official Nissin website; the original cup noodle flavor is a ginger ale style soda with the scent of the salty sauce and pepper. The seafood soda is a cream soda style with a “hidden” seafood flavor (not totally sure how they are going to “hide” the seafood flavor, but it’s their soda, so whatever). The curry soda is a cola-style drink mixed with curry spices and finally, the chili tomato soda is a tomato-style soda with a “refreshing, tingling stimulus.”
The best part of the announcement, however, is the tagline that opens it up: “Whether it’s delicious or not is up to you.” as though Nissin is daring their customers to try all four flavors and actually enjoy them.
The unfortunate (again, debatable) thing is that you can’t just buy the sodas by themselves but rather you have to buy them as part of the special 50th-anniversary collection which includes the four sodas, eight tubes of Cup Noodle Umaibo snacks, and eight cup noodles in various flavors, all for the low price of 2,998 yen (about $27 USD). The first round of pre-orders is happening on the official Nissin website from September 13th to September 17th. After that they will release any remaining stocks to other online retailers, including Amazon, au PAY Market, Rakuten, Lohaco, and Yodobashi.
