Not too long ago, in January this year to be precise, anime fans met and instantly fell in love with Marin Kitagawa from the series My Dress-Up Darling. For three months, fans followed her budding relationship with Gojo Wakana and sighed happily when the last episode of the first season played out, leaving us all with a good feeling in our tummies. From that moment onward, however, the waiting game began. When were we going to get more of this adorable romantic comedy? Apparently sooner than many of us expected.
At an event in Tokyo held this past weekend, the staff behind the hit series revealed a sequel was in production. Unfortunately, as is usual with these cases, no further details regarding the format or even a vague release window were revealed.
Starting as a manga created by Shinichi Fukuda, My Dress-Up Darling began its run in the Square Enix imprint Young Gangan in January 2018. As of March 2022, the series has released nine volumes in Japan while six volumes have been released in English as of August 2022.
As mentioned, the anime adaptation began airing in January 2022 with animation produced by studio Cloverworks, Keisuke Shinohara serving as the director, and Yoriko Tomita as the writer. It was an instant smash hit that consistently topped online popularity polls as the season progressed and led to a dramatic and noticeable rise in manga circulation around the world.
In the series, the main character is a high school student named Gojo Wakana who aspires to become a master Hina doll craftsman like his grandfather. Because of an incident from his childhood, though, he has become reclusive and doesn’t socialize with others much. One day while using his school’s home ec room, he runs into the most popular girl in his class, Marin Kitagawa. After she learns Gojo knows how to use a sewing machine, she shares her secret: she wants to cosplay as her favorite eroge character and enlists Gojo’s help to make it happen. Thus begins an unlikely pairing that sparks new feelings inside their hearts.
