I’m not really one for mystery novels. They’ve just never been my jam. I do, however, love a good villain, and James Moriarty from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series fits that profile perfectly. Why do I bring this up? Because Mr. Moriarty happens to be the star of the Yūkoku no Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot) manga which was recently announced to be getting an anime adaptation!
At the annual Jump Festa event held in Japan, it was revealed that the manga series would be appearing on television screens at some point in the future. Sadly, no further information was given at the time including voice actors, production studio, or release date.
Moriarty the Patriot is a manga written by Takeuchi Ryousuke and illustrated by Miyoshi Hikaru that first appeared in Jump SQ magazine in August 2016 and has since been compiled into ten volumes thus far. While this will be the first time that the series has received a television adaptation, it isn’t the first time that it has been animated, as a promotional video was produced for the manga back in July 2018.
Additionally, the manga inspired a stage musical that ran this past May. A second stage musical will be produced and run in summer 2020.
The story for the manga takes place in Victorian England and follows the sworn enemy of Sherlock Holmes. In this version of the story, Moriarty is an orphan along with his brother and they are adopted into the same family. After growing up in the noble household, the brothers decide to turn to a life of crime with the ultimate objective being to eliminate the class system in England.
Unfortunately, no one has licensed this series for release in English as of yet.
Stay tuned to this website for more information about this series as it is released over the coming months!
