Over the weekend, the rumor mill started to go wild when a single Japanese blog reported that Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, one of the most popular recent anime comedy series from Kyoto Animation, would get a second season in the very near future. Unfortunately, no one was willing to corroborate that story, so it stayed simply a rumor. On Monday, August 10th, however, one of our greatest wishes was finally confirmed to be a reality!
According to the 10th volume of the manga, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid will get a second television anime season titled Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S with the S standing for “Super Supreme Second life Starts.” The new season is scheduled to air sometime in 2021, with Kyoto Animation returning to produce the animation.
Originally a manga series created by Coolkyousinnjya which began serializing in 2013 in Monthly Action magazine, the main series has been compiled into ten volumes thus far and multiple spinoff manga featuring different main characters have also been released. The first anime season aired from January 2017 to April and was wildly popular with fans and critics. It was streamed on both Crunchyroll and Funimation, with Crunchyroll describing the story as:
Miss Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment — until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl (albeit with horns and a long tail!), who will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Miss Kobayashi’s normal life is about to go off the deep end!
The second season was originally announced back in February 2019, but the status of the project became questionable after the death of the original director, Yasuhiro Takemoto, in the Kyoto Animation arson attack that occurred in July 2019. The new announcement does not reveal who Kyoto Animation has tapped to fill the shoes of Takemoto in the director’s chair, but stay tuned to the J-List blog for more information as it is released to the public in the coming weeks and months.
This is easily some of the best news that we will hear all week. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a fun comedy that deserves all the love it receives and so much more. It’s also a fantastic testament to the willpower of Kyoto Animation to continue moving forward with their projects and resume normal activities over a year after the terrible tragedy that befell them.
