One of the most forgettable and poorly executed series of 2017 was the romantic revenge comedy, Masamune-Kun’s Revenge. A snoozefest from start to finish, it was absolutely no shock that it came and went with little fanfare or attention being paid to it in the following months and even years. Fast forward to 2022, however, and we can now report that Masamune is getting a new lease on life.
In a new promotional video posted to the official website, the staff behind the long-dormant anime series has revealed that a sequel series titled Masamune-Kun’s Revenge R is in the works. No other details were released regarding the sequel at the time.
Originally a manga series written by Hazuki Takeoka and illustrated by Korean artist Tiv which ran from April 2013 to July 2018 in the monthly shonen magazine Monthly Comic Rex, Masamune-Kun’s Revenge is a romantic revenge comedy that starts many years ago when the main character, Masamune Makabe, was chubby but still friendly with a rich girl around his age named Aki Adagaki. That is until one day she cruelly rejects him, which leads to Masamune going on a quest to better himself all the way up until high school where he is now a star student and exceedingly handsome (if not a little full of himself). Unrecognizable to his former tormenter, Masamune begins his mission to make Aki fall in love with him just so that he can publicly reject her just like she did to him. The manga series ran for ten volumes and was released in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.
The anime adaptation was produced by the famed house of moe, Silver Link, with Mirai Minato serving as the director working off scripts written by Michiko Yokote and Kento Shimoyama. Character designs were provided by Yūki Sawairi. It ran from January 2017 to March of the same year, as previously mentioned, with little to no fanfare from the audience around the world.
