The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are about to get a serious artistic jolt thanks to two much-beloved manga creators!
On Tuesday, July 30, it was revealed that manga creators Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) and Naoki Urasawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys) will be joining the many talented individuals who will be helping to bring the Summer Olympics being held in Tokyo next year to life.
Their roles, as one would imagine, are more artistic than athletic. In the announcement, it was stated that the two manga artists would be lending their talents to creating promotional posters for the Olympics and Paralympics (Urasawa will be working on the Olympics poster while Araki will be working on the Paralympics poster).
Araki has created many different works over the span of his career but his most famous and longest-running title is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure which began serialization in 1987 and still runs to this day. As of 2016, the series had printed over 100 million copies in Japan alone. He started, however, in his teenage years submitting his first manga during his first year of high school. Finally making his debut in 1980 with the one-shot Poker Under Arms, this title led to his first serialized series in 1983, Cool Shock B.T.
Urasawa is a multi-time prestigious award winner and has multiple hit series over his career with his most notable being Monster, 20th Century Boys, Master Keaton, Yawara!, and more. Taking inspiration from manga legends who came before him such as Osamu Tezuka and Katsuhiro Otomo, Urasawa created his own stark and unique art style that has served him well over the span of multiple decades as a professional in the manga industry.
The Tokyo Summer Olympics will be running from July 24, 2020, to August 9, 2020, so anxious fans of Urasawa and Araki should be able to see their finished works at some point within the next few months.
