A little over a month ago, I reported on the J-List blog that Funimation and Crunchyroll had revealed that both streaming services will offer a Dr. Stone season two simulcast this coming January 2021, with Crunchyroll streaming the subbed version while Funimation will stream the dubbed version. At the time, we didn’t have much to go on besides a key visual, but that changed on the morning of Friday, October 9th, when the official Twitter account posted the very first promotional video for the upcoming second season.
If you’re wondering, this promotional video is actually just a teaser for the much larger trailer which will premiere during the Jump Special Anime Festa 2020 being held Sunday in Japan on YouTube (which, as far as I am aware, will be region locked to Japan).

— アニメ『Dr.STONE』公式 ファイナルシーズン2025年1月より分割3クールで放送決定! (@STONE_anime_off) October 9, 2020
Originally a manga written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi, Dr. Stone first began serializing in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2017. It would go on to win the shonen category at the Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2019. In July 2019, an anime adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment began broadcasting.
The first anime season featured Shinya Iino as the director, working off scripts written by Yuichiro Kido, while the background music was a team effort between Tatsuya Kato, Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and Yuki Kanesaka. The second season is officially titled Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, as it will follow the Stone Wars arc from the manga series.
Viz Media currently publishes the manga in English and they describe the plot of the first volume of Dr. Stone as:
One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, high schooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he’s not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he’s got a grand plan in mind — to kickstart civilization with the power of science!
