Over the last decade or so, my appreciation for both bishounen characters and villainous characters has increased dramatically. I often find that the best character within a series is, in fact, the bishounen villain that no one saw coming. This is why I’ve been so keen on trying out the mobile gacha game, Disney Twisted Wonderland, since it launched in Japan back in 2020. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to be able to check it out because of its lack of English localization… until now.
On Monday, December 20th, Aniplex of America took to their social media accounts and revealed that the hit game, which is inspiring an upcoming anime adaptation, will finally be released in English on January 20th, 2022. The bad news is that the English version is only being launched in the US and Canada for now, but keep crossing those fingers that fans in Europe and other parts of the world will get to have fun with this game soon too.
In the game, the primary story follows a young girl (default name: Yuu) who is summoned to a special high school via a magic mirror. When she gets her bearings, she learns that the school is called Night Ravens College. Each dorm is inspired by a different Disney movie (including but not limited to The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Sleeping Beauty, and others) with the leader of each dorm being a bishounen version of that movie’s villain.
Pre-registration for the game begins on December 21st, 2021, with special rewards being given to players upon the launch of the game depending on how many pre-registrations sign up.
As mentioned, the game has been pretty successful in Japan since it launched, with the game already receiving a manga adaptation and an upcoming anime that will stream on Disney+ in Japan upon its launch.
I love properties where the villains get to take center stage. Villains turn a good story into a fantastic and memorable story. Without the conflict that the villains provide, there is no drama and without that, you can say farewell to anyone caring. While it’s true that too many cooks spoil the soup, an entire world filled with bishounen villains is enough to make me hit that pre-register button.
