Get ready to sail the high seas with this original co-production between Crunchyroll and Adult Swim!
Over the weekend, it was revealed that Crunchyroll and Adult Swim will team up to create a brand new original twelve episode series that will be produced by Production I.G and will air on television and stream on Crunchyroll at some point in 2021.
The title of the anime is Fena: Pirate Princess which pretty much sums up what the anime will be about but if you need a more in-depth plot synopsis, Crunchyroll describes it as:
Fena: Pirate Princess is a 12 episode original anime series that tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman. Fena has been raised on an Island where there is no hope of becoming anything more than chattel, to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: forge a new identity, free of bondage, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mysteries behind a keyword “Eden.” It is the story of a lifetime adventure she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals!
Unfortunately, for the most part, we’re still in the dark regarding the cast and crew for this series. We do know that Kazuto Nakazawa will be directing, but other than that tidbit of information, Crunchyroll is keeping tight-lipped about this title for the time being.
Based on the preview video shown above, however, this looks like it’s going to be a fantastic action series with some nice drama thrown in just for good measure. Pirates as villains or anti-heroes are a pretty common trope in anime so here’s to hoping that they can do something original with the idea!
