One sequel series that premieres this month that I have been looking forward to watching is the second season of the golf anime, Birdie Wing. It’s more than just wanting to see the new season, however. Ever since the first set of episodes ended last year, I’ve had a deep, burning need to commune with these characters and get to know them better. This is why I was so excited to learn that on June 15th, 2023, fans around the world will get to play with these golf girls in a whole new way!
In an announcement that hit the internet on April 7th, VIVERSE and WOWWOW Technology revealed plans to release a brand new video game based on the Birdie Wing universe. Naturally, the game is a sports game with you helping Eve, Aoi, and others as they take on opponents in games of golf that only Birdie Wing can deliver! Or, as they describe it:
“Experience golf with Eve, Aoi, and friends in a detailed graphic recreation for Nintendo Switch™! The game features a story mode that recreates the classic storyline portrayed in the animation, as well as a free mode that allows players to use Joy-Con™ swing controls to play against each other. In addition, there are mini-games to experience the gimmicky putting practice. Let’s experience the world of BIRDIE WING more deeply through the visual game.”
Furthermore, plans were revealed for future Metaverse events, virtual reality golf experiences, and a mobile game, but no firm details were given for any of those.
For the most part, I try to stay away from video game adaptations of anime properties. Sometimes they can be very good (Sailor Moon: Another Story for the Super Nintendo comes to mind right away), but then there’s also the other, not-so-good, side of the coin which features tons of pointless dating sims and puzzle games. This game looks like it’s going to belong to the former category, however, thanks to the game seemingly keeping it simple by just giving fans a straightforward (or, as straightforward as this extreme golf anime can get) sports game. I’ve already added this release date to my calendar and I can’t wait for mid-June to arrive so that I can download this game and hog my girlfriend’s Switch for golf-playing purposes.
