Kunai, a flesh golem who hates doctors, needs Glenn’s help in finding and reattaching her arm.
Case 3 – “The Flesh Golem Who Hates Doctors”
Hmm.
While it may appear to be an episode about Doctor Glenn finding another monster girl to lay his hands on and make her squirm and moan, Monster Girl Doctor did a great deal of world-building and setting up a dramatic arc. Any time we see a location develop quickly under a strong leader, in our case Lindworm with Skadi Dragenfelt, there is bound to be dissent and criminal enterprise in the shadows. Politicians may compliment economic and social progress publicly, but they also have power and economic structures they’d like to preserve so they can maintain their status and wealth. Likewise, organized crime may have found ways to profit during the war, but rapid acceptance of peace may crimp that flow of illicit money. This week, we saw Skadi waging operations against slavers, with her attendant Kunai Zenow becoming a casualty. Does Lindworm not have a police force yet? I’m curious about these practical peace enforcement structures and hope to get some answers from Monster Girl Doctor as its story progresses.
Another bit of world-building was Monster Girl Doctor’s introduction of magic. For the first couple of episodes we’ve seen that different monsters have their own specific health issues, but nothing supernatural despite the show’s fantasy setting. Perhaps those little fairies flitting around the Litbeit Clinic are magical, but they could also be flying like hummingbirds. However, Kunai’s introduction as an assembled person from other people’s body parts definitively draws on magic for how she can still hear the voices of the original owners. Where did her personality come from? Is she an amalgam of those other voices? What would happen if Glenn reassembled her fully like he did with her arm and leg? Very intriguing!
The last thing that made me sit up and pay close attention was how Sapphee goes to pubs and has a drinking buddy. Sapphee is the perfect snake girlfriend! And she has a flirty monster girlfriend in Arahnia the Spider Lady. Those two must be a force of nature in any pub they visit. Arahnia and Sapphee’s conversation was a good example of how Monster Girl Doctor keeps its humor light in a narrative way. We get some laughs, but we also get characterization and more information about the world the characters inhabit. The information I received from Glenn’s back alley surgery on Kunai is that you can make as much noise as you want back there, and nobody cares. What happens in the back alley, stays in the back alley!
Heh.
Ooh. Crime drama! Frankenstein’s Ninja has some nice body parts. That’s not good. She’s surrounded.
And we’re back to monster girls flirting with the oblivious Doctor Glenn. This Slime Lady is the gentle older sister type. Her character design follows the same concept as the Seal Lady from the last episode, where the monster or animal part of the chimera becomes the hairpiece for the lady, letting the rest of her body have sexy humanoid proportions. Oh. A surprise visit from Skadi Dragenfelt.
Lots of info about Skadi the City Council Representative and how she influenced the successful development of Lindworm as an integrated monster-human city in only ten years. Haha. Skadi is a low-talker type. And Kunai is her overbearing translator, attendant, and bodyguard. This is hilarious. Kunai needs to talk about herself through the words of Lady Skadi. Yes, Glenn, very confusing. Kunai lost her arm and Skadi wants Glenn to find it and sew it back on. Unfortunately, Kunai also hates doctors. Good luck, Glenn!
Ah. Doctor Cthulhy is throwing business at Glenn again. There’s a pattern emerging of Glenn getting well-connected patients. Skadi explains that Kunai isn’t a monster, but the product of a medical experiment from the Far East. I figured, with a name like Kunai… What’s a Frankenstein’s Monster Girl from the Far East called? Uh, Kunai, for one. I like this dynamic between Sapphee and Kunai. Sapphee has an attitude of one-upmanship when it comes to other monster girls. Kunai doesn’t want Glenn’s help, since she hates doctors, but she also doesn’t want Skadi to know she disobeyed her orders. Complicated set of feelings here. And a brigand took a bat to her leg. Always listen to Lady Skadi.
Fun. Glenn ran into Tisalia in casual dress. He’s probably going to run into some other monster girls who like him too. Ack. Kunai lost her leg in that exchange. Uh oh. She made a feminine gasp! Glenn is feeling up her leg, I’m sure. Accidental sexy time is starting. Get your headphones, people. Oh dear. Tisalia called Glenn a high-level pervert, er, peculiar person for calmly handling a severed leg. Ha! Tisalia likes her perverts. She outright said she fell in love with Glenn again. Glenn did not even react to that. Savage alpha male, or oblivious otaku? Laying odds on the latter.
This Far East doctor who put Kunai together has excellent taste in body parts. These souls say familiar things from what we know about Kunai already, like “I want to serve a worthy master. I want to protect them. I want them to acknowledge me,” but that last one puts her into Glenn’s harem, “I want to fall in love again!”
People just looking at Doctor Glenn carrying a detached leg with wiggling toes around. See? Here’s Lulala. Glenn just attracts lovey-dovey monster girls to his earnest self. Yay! Lulala found Kunai’s arm! Kunai is so sensitive to Glenn’s touch. Hey, Lulala is clever! Why not just ask the body parts where Kunai is? They answered!
Glenn is going to reattach Kunai’s limbs more completely by suturing the blood vessels and nerves too, not just the muscle tissue and skin. His theory is that this will make Kunai’s body more her own than the original owners of the separate body parts. Eh? Glenn’s name is 紅蓮 (ぐれん, guren) like the crimson lotus flower? What a coincidence that an Italian style renaissance doctor has family from Japan… Kunai says her creator named her “no suffering,” which could be 苦ない (くない, kunai – no pain, suffering), but that’s a hell of a homonym for a ninja weapon. Oh? Is Kunai disappointed that Glenn will finish stitching her up so soon? Well, she’ll have great memories of him touching her upper and inner thigh, then. Wear headphones, people!
Oh ho! Sapphee’s drinking buddy is Arahnia the Spider Lady! Arahnia brought something for Sapphee, but they’re being vague about it. TBD! Something’s in that basket, but let’s concentrate on Kunai moaning and gasping until the end of the episode.
Kunai says she doesn’t feel pain, but too much pleasure is certainly a problem. Job done, heh, she’s going to save her punishment for Glenn later. Double heh. Ugh. Those bandits or whatever sure do like spying on beautiful monster girls like Kunai.
Glenn’s fairy assistants need milk every day. Eh? Sapphee became late-term pregnant in just a few hours? No. She put something under her skirt. That’s our cliffhanger?
Monster Girl Doctor streams on Crunchyroll.
