Just in time for everyone to update their holiday wish lists comes this announcement from Tokyo-based Tsubame Industries. In it, the young company revealed that not only have they created a completely drivable personal mecha, but it is now available to purchase provided you live in Japan and have 400 million yen (USD$2,674,580 at the current conversion rate) sitting around in your loose change purse. Though, in fairness, that comes with a year’s worth of free maintenance.
Titled The Archax, this personal mecha suit boasts 26 points of articulation, runs on battery power, and moves on wheels attached to the bottom of its four legs. When standing in robot mode, you can expect your Archax to stand 4.5 meters (a little under 15 feet), but if you keep it in vehicle mode, it compacts down to 3.9 meters tall (a little under 13 feet).
Unfortunately, the official YouTube account videos showing the mecha in action are region-blocked to Japan. However, we can at least offer you these still images of the interior and exterior.
Hold on. I know you’re excited to convince your friends and family to pool enough money to buy one of these so that you can officially be the coolest person in your office. Trust me, I am too. We should note, though, that even if you purchase yourself an Archax, it will take a while to get to you, and I mean that in every possible sense.
First, Tsubame Industries only plans to make five personal mecha in their initial batch. Second, you should expect to wait twelve to eighteen months before it will arrive. Third, even if you get one, you shouldn’t expect to make it your new commuting vehicle since its top speed is ten kilometers per hour (about six mph).
Still, if you have the money for one of these lying around, I imagine this would be a dream to own. What would you do if you woke up on the morning(s) of your winter holiday of choice and found one of these in your driveway? Let us know in the comments!
Meanwhile, if you’re aching to own your own mecha but don’t have the money for an Archax, might I suggest checking out this Gurren Lagann figure from the J-List store?
