Tite Kubo’s follow-up to Bleach went to the other side of the world for its tale of magic and monsters. Burn The Witch showcases a couple of cute and cool witches who hunt dragons in London. Well, they live and work in Reverse London with the West Branch of Soul Society.
This new anime adaptation brings the prequel chapter 0.8 Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover to life. Studio Colorido has not given us a release date quite yet, but Ninny and Noel running around and flying should keep us content for a while.
A couple of the cute and cool witches seen in Burn The Witch are as follows.
- Ninny Spangcole — Asami Tano (Sarah Kazuno in Love Live!). A skilled and fiery witch in service to Wing Bind. She is partnered with Noel on the battlefield, and Macy on stage.
- Noel Niihashi — Yuina Yamada (Michiru Kota in Idol Time PriPara). A skilled and quiet witch in service to Wing Bind. She’s partnered with Ninny on the battlefield.
- Macy Baljure — Saori Hayami (Oyuki in the 2022 Urusei Yatsura). The former singer of Cecile Die Twice who used to play with Ninny. She becomes involved in Reverse London’s dragon situation.
Studio Colorido has maintained a home page and official X/Twitter page to promote Burn The Witch. Additional series information, and some key visuals, can be found there.
Tite Kubo’s Hidden Worlds
Tite Kubo set the world ablaze when he first released Bleach. The tale of shinigami fighting Hollows to protect humanity captured the hearts of otaku everywhere. Ichigo’s tale of unknowingly following in his parents’ footsteps ran from August 7th, 2001 to August 22nd, 2016. Shueisha published all 74 volumes in Weekly Shonen Jump. There were numerous adaptations, including an anime, various video games, light novels, anime-original movies, and a live-action film.
Kubo followed up his tale of shinigami fighting Hollows with a tale of witches and wizards fighting dragons. Burn The Witch is set in London, England, a world away from Japan. However, the two series share the same universe. A crossover would indeed be epic, but I digress. Kubo began working on the series on August 24th, 2020. Since then, Shuseisha has released only a single volume in Weekly Shonen Jump.
Witches and Wizards Fight Dragons
There are two versions of the London envisioned by Burn The Witch. Front London, where normal people live, and Reverse London, where magical guardians live. The Western Branch of Soul Society resides here, with its own version of the Gotei 13: Wing Bind. While the Eastern Branch has shinigami on hand to fight Hollows, Wing Bind has witches and wizards to fight dragons. Though, much to their pride, a dragon hasn’t caused a fatality in a century. This changes with the appearance of Balgo Parks and Macy Baljure.
Unbeknownst to all, Balgo’s best friend Shelby died a decade ago, and a Disguiser demon had been using his body to pass himself off as a human. Macy came across a tiny dragon and named her Elly. Their close proximity to dragons would not only put them in danger, but they would awaken unique magical abilities. However, not all tales where humans meet dragons end with a “happily ever after” scene.
If you’re looking for two cute witches who save the day, the J-List shop has some suggestions. The Ninny Spangcole ViVignette Figure and Noel Niihashi ViVignette Figure from Burn the Witch are available for pre-order.
