An otaku bucket of chicken? Yep! It’s real.
Social media is a powerful thing. It allows people all over the world to connect. With the addition of automatic translators, language barriers are becoming thinner as the years go by. More importantly, it has spawned memes. The circulation of such has affected the perspective of the contemporary world in more ways than one would expect beyond just getting a few laughs. Probably the most significant influence it has held is corporate and brand marketing.
Today, KFC España holds an unrivaled presence on social media for Spanish speakers across the globe, thanks to the creative and eclectic chaos they stir up on Twitter every day without fail.
Alongside endless jokes also comes new information such as holiday traditions around the world. Common to some, obscure and wild to others: Japan celebrates Christmas nationwide with fried chicken, specifically KFC. Well, KFC España has taken the bull by the horns to campaign an absolute joke as a limited-time special item on their menu, complete with a new commercial shot in Tokyo. Introducing KFC España’s Otaku Bucket of Chicken.
Aside from it being teriyaki flavored, there honestly isn’t much else to it. Odds are you can get the same product under a different name in any country that has KFC. However, as capitalism has shown time and time again, marketing can sometimes be the defining key to success. What kind of marketing could they be doing? Truth is: memes. Nothing but memes in Spanish and the occasional random Japanese version.
