While we all might love anime, enjoying what each new season sends our way, we all have a few shows that we really dislike for one reason or another. I asked J-List customers, “What anime do you hate?” and we got a lot of interesting responses!
Note that we’re talking about anime that fans, for whatever reason, didn’t like, not specific characters inside otherwise decent series. Also, people have different reasons for hating each show, so if your favorite is on the list, please don’t be offended!
What Anime Do You Hate? J-List Customers Tell Us!
School Days. The anime based on the cult-classic fully animated hentai game from JAST USA became a target of fan hate when the super dark ending dropped. Actually, the final episode got delayed by the famous “Nice Boat” video because a teenager murdered her father with a Higurashi-style Japanese axe right before the final episode was to air, and TV stations feared a connection with violent anime. When the (heavily censored) final episode aired two weeks later, fans were upset by where the story went. (That ending is not part of the School Days game.)
Rent a Girlfriend. While I love any show that gives us great waifus to obsess over, some fans can’t get past the story or the annoying main character.
Darling in the Franxx. Everyone loved the show until it went into “Gainax shoutout mode.” The story finally went in the only place it could go, into space, in a final homage to the great Aim for the Top Gunbuster anime.
Rosario + Vampire. While I love it for giving me lots of sexy gifs to post to J-List’s Twitter account, true fans were not amused to see the excellent story in the manga ignored to allow for more sexy fan service.
Shin Koihime Muso. Another frustrating anime that ignores the story of the original hentai game, frustrating fans of the original.
Golden Time. A “dere-dere” (lovey-dovey) anime featuring the cutest and most loving girl ever, some fans did not like where the story went.
Occultic;Nine. While Steins;Gate is legendary, it seems that all the other anime in the Science Adventure series by Nitroplus/Mages failed to impress. I believe fans were put off by Ryouka’s ginormous boobs.
One Piece/Naruto/DBZ. These famous “gateway” shows introduced a lot of fans to anime… but that word implies that fans will pass through the doorway and discover even more amazing shows on the other side. Sadly, some fans never move beyond the shonen genre, which is kind of mottai nai (such a waste).
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Another potentially hated anime is Jojo, the story of the 140+ year history of the Joestar family. Considering that I boycotted Top Gun back in the 80s because it was “so popular it was annoying,” I can understand being turned off by something whose worldwide popularity has become so massive that athletes at the Tokyo Olympics were doing Jojo poses. I used to be like them, not wanting to watch a show with such an established fandom…but I learned the error of my ways.
Want to know the background of Jojo? We’ve got a blog post for you here!
Glasslip. Sometimes fans can be frustrated at a missed story opportunity. “The premise mentions that a girl and a boy can see or hear fragments of the future, although it is suggested that there’s a bond between them, nothing happens throughout the 13 chapters that it lasts.”
Aku no Hana. Anime studios occasionally experiment with 100% CGI animation because you know, those animators just make so much money. Sometimes the result can be acceptable (Knights of Sidonia), or downright glorious (Hi Score Girl, BEASTARS). Aku no Hana was…I don’t know, as I couldn’t watch even three seconds of it.
Hyouka. If we fail to connect emotionally with characters, a show can feel frustratingly slow. This was the case for one reader who disliked Kyoani’s Hyouka.
In Another World with my Smartphone. A genetic isekai anime a Redditor described as “So unnoteworthy that it in itself becomes noteworthy for its unnoteworthiness.” And it’s getting a new season, because of course it is!
Conception. A truly awful anime that appeared on both the list of worst isekai and worst harem anime, this was a show that definitely should never have been made.
Bonus anime: Anime-Gataris. Based on its low MAL score of just 6.38, the show is certainly not one most hold in high regard. But I found the story of a girl making a journey to becoming an anime otaku to be awesome, filled with fourth-wall-breaking jokes and interesting observations about why we’re all fans. The climax came at the end, where the character designs start reverting into the past, showing the characters as if the show were set in the 90s, then the 80s, then the 70s…
