Viking fans have been waiting a long time for this day! In a live stream, the crew behind the upcoming second season of Vinland Saga revealed all the details that fans have been craving, including a release month and a brand new promotional video!
As you saw in the video, we can confirm that the new season will premiere in January 2023 and will have studio MAPPA producing the animation (replacing WIT STUDIO from season one). For the most part, the staff is remaining the same, with the only change being made is that Kouhei Ogawa will step in as the CG director.
If you missed the first season of this series, you could honestly be forgiven seeing as how the series spent the first three years of its existence being locked away on Amazon Prime (which is a fate worse than Netflix in the eyes of many anime fans) before it finally received a home video release by Sentai Filmworks on this side of the Pacific in 2021. The good news is that along with this second season news, the official website has revealed that the first season will hit HIDIVE, Crunchyroll, and Netflix starting July 7th, 2022.
Originally a manga written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2005 before being switched to Monthly Afternoon. The series is up to 26 volumes in Japan as of May 2022, while Kodansha has published 24 volumes in English as of December 2021. In an interview conducted in 2019, author Yukimura confirmed the manga is currently in its final story arc.
Vinland Saga has been raved about by those in the know for years now. It’s just sad that so few people have been able to enjoy the first anime adaptation. Here’s to hoping that people take advantage of the good fortune bestowed upon them when this series hits some of the more popular streaming services in July.
