A new king of the internet cats has been crowned, and he’s a-meow-zing… don’t worry, I’ll see myself out for that one.
Born a dozen years ago in the distant past of 2019 (you remember those times, right?), the internet instantly fell in love with a little Scottish Fold named Motimaru (pronounced “Mochimaru”), sending his playful kitten videos into the stratosphere racking up millions of views. The videos are so popular in fact that Guinness World Records has recognized the feline for “Most views for a cat on YouTube”. Do you want to know the number that earned the kitty the honor? 619,586,290 as of August 12th and that number has only gotten higher as of this writing.
Do you want to see how Motimaru reacts to receiving the award? Well, it’s mostly indifferent but adorable nonetheless.
In case you’re wondering, Motimaru is the most viewed CAT on YouTube but the true king of the furbabies on YouTube is Maymo the Lemon Beagle who was certified as the most-watched animal on YouTube back in 2018. That record still stands to this day, though glancing at the two furbabies’ channels makes it feel a little unfair since Maymo stars in comedy sketches and Motimaru just mostly acts cute and playful.
On the other hand, Motimaru has their own Twitter, where they apparently can score millions of impressions from a single tweet, so maybe it’s not so unfair after all.
Regardless of who wins the battle between dogs and cats on the internet (spoiler: it’s totally dogs), I think the one thing we can all agree on is that we are a furry creature loving species. If aliens were to invade the planet tomorrow, we’d totally roll over and let them conquer us, provided they looked adorable enough.
