The Seven Deadly Sins: Imperial Wrath of The Gods Hits Netflix August 6th

Netflix has gotten into the business of producing countless original anime projects over the last few years. From smash hits like Devilman Crybaby and Neo Yokio to more under the radar releases like Kuromukuro and the Ultraman series, Netflix has helped provide the primary production support for numerous animation projects. If you go on Netflix though, you’ll be able to find plenty of anime that aren’t entirely Netflix-created projects, and are simply being licensed to stream on the global streaming platform. One such series is The Seven Deadly Sins, an iconic shonen series with numerous seasons and installments. For fans of the show looking to dig into more, Netflix has just announced that the latest season, The Seven Deadly Sins: Imperial Wrath of The Gods (Nanatsu no Taizai: Kamigami no Gekirin) will be arriving on the streaming platform on August 6th.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Imperial Wrath of The Gods began airing in Japan last October, running all the way until March 25th of this year. It marked a surprising turn for the anime adaptation of Nakaba Suzuki’s manga, as Studio DEEN became the primary production company instead of A-1 Pictures. Susumu Nishizawa, who previously handled storyboards on The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments, directed the anime. Rintarou Ikeda was in charge of series composition, previously writing for shows like Love and Lies, Hakyū Hōshin Engi, and Love Tyrant. Rie Nishino, who previously worked on Now and Then, Here and There and Wind: A Breath of Heart, was credited for “animation character setting.” Music composing duty was handled by Kohta Yamamato, Takafumi Wada, and well-known musician Hiroyuki Sawano.

A summary of The Seven Deadly Sins, according to MyAnimeList:

In a world similar to the European Middle Ages, the feared yet revered Holy Knights of Britannia use immensely powerful magic to protect the region of Britannia and its kingdoms. However, a small subset of the Knights supposedly betrayed their homeland and turned their blades against their comrades in an attempt to overthrow the ruler of Liones. They were defeated by the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that these legendary knights, called the “Seven Deadly Sins,” were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights themselves staged a coup d’état, and thus became the new, tyrannical rulers of the Kingdom of Liones.

The Seven Deadly Sins originally started as a manga in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine back in 2021, running all the way until March 25th of this year. Kodansha released 41 compiled volumes of the series, while Kodansha Comics is currently publishing the manga in English both digitally and in print.

It wouldn’t be until 2014 that The Seven Deadly Sins became an anime, releasing 24 episodes through until 2015. This was followed up by the four-episode mini-series The Seven Deadly Sins -Signs of Holy War- in 2016, which eventually led into the full-length television series The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments in 2018. Later that year, a film sequel titled The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky debuted across Japan. Netflix has streamed all of these entries with both English and Japanese audio.

Anime fans of The Seven Deadly Sins in Japan also have a brand new adaptation of the series to look forward to. The 17th issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine confirmed that a new television series based on the manga, Nanatsu no Taizai: Fundo no Shinpan (The Seven Deadly Sins: Anger’s Judgement), is in production. Additionally, the entire main cast of voice actors from the previous anime is set to return. The new anime was set to premiere in October, airing on TV Tokyo’s network of six channels as well as BS-TV Tokyo. Due to COVID-19, however, that premiere date has been postponed indefinitely, with the official website and Twitter account of the anime set to make an announcement when a new premiere date is set.
