Comiket 98 Cancelled due to Coronavirus Pandemic Concerns
It has recently been announced that Comiket 98, scheduled for May 5-8, 2020, has been cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic concerns.
This development was reported, among others, by A.I.R (Anime Intelligence (and) Research) on Twitter, quoting an ITMedia article. As stated by the organizers (translated into English):
“From the perspective of preventing the spread of the new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), we are very sorry, but we will cancel the event. It will be a month before the event, and we are very sorry. Thank you for your understanding. “
While it’s known that participants have already been notified through email, it’s mentioned that more information and further details would be posted on the official website at some point in the future.
This has also been officially confirmed by Comiket’s main Twitter account, proving that it is genuine.
Comiket is one of the biggest otaku events in Japan, which has been held since 1975. It is now one of the many public events to have been cancelled in the wake of the pandemic since February, especially amidst efforts by Japanese authorities to control the virus’ spread within the country.
