No matter where you look online these days, everyone is talking about COVID-19. Not only that, but it seems like every third image on social media these days is of empty store shelves from people panic buying whatever it is they think they need, from cleaning supplies to toilet paper… especially toilet paper.
This is particularly true in Japan, which has seen people buying toilet paper in bulk despite there being no real need for it. It’s gotten so bad that some stores are reporting thefts of toilet paper from their public restrooms.
Until recently, one store in Niigata Prefecture would keep at least fifteen rolls of toilet paper in a cupboard in their public restroom and go through less than one roll a day from general consumption. Then the virus hit, and suddenly five or six rolls were disappearing every day. This is when the store manager took matters into their own hands and came up with an ingenious way to protect their precious personal stock.

As you can see in the image, the store manager skipped way past the usual polite ‘Please do not steal our TP’ signs and went straight to protecting the paper with curse talismans!
Using some scary-looking kanji including “hungry” and “evil” along with three all-seeing eyes, it seems that the unnamed store manager has stumbled across the perfect solution: ever since installing the curses, none of the toilet paper has gone missing.
In an interview with the Japanese website, J-Town Net, the store manager said, “I think humans naturally fear the unknown and curses. I used that in this case and am glad it worked out as I had hoped.”
With more places around the world having to plead with their customers to not steal their toilet paper, it’s possible that we’ll see more cursed toilet paper popping up around the world to ward off would-be paper thieves… then again, maybe not.
