People looking forward to the fighting game spinoff of Cygame’s mobile game Granblue Fantasy got news in the form of a new trailer announcing Zeta and Vaseraga will round out the starting roster of 11 characters. Being developed by famous 2D fighting game specialists, ArcSystem Works, the new characters make a very strong first impression, embellished with superb animations and effects.
The trailer shows off brief snippets of the rest of the roster that were previously announced: Gran, Katalina, Charlotta, Lancelot, Ferry, Fastiva, Lowain, Percival, and Metera. The two newcomers are the primary focus of the trailer, where they demonstrate some of their capabilities.
Zeta and Vaseraga are members of “the Society,” a group in the Granblue universe with the goal of hunting primal beasts. Zeta is a sharp-tongued, confident hunter that strives competitively with her partner, Vaseraga. She uses a spear imbued with magic that allows her to fight from a distance with projectiles and can take to the air with multi-directional spear thrusts that propel her around the screen. Her playstyle is very reminiscent of Mai Natsume from Blazblue, another fighting game developed by ArcSystem Works with her multiple hitting spear attacks and directional screen control.
Her fellow Society member Vaseraga is a hulking being of the Draph race in Granblue. He fights with a massive scythe. He is a cursed man that feels no pain — represented in his gameplay in the form of armored attacks that can absorb multiple hits from an opponent before delivering his counter-attack. He appears to have an aggressive playstyle where these armored attacks, used in conjunction with his towering size, allow him to control massive amounts of space with his enormous scythe swings.
People disappointed that their favorite Granblue character did not make it into the game should keep in mind that DLC content has been announced. So, despite the launch roster being somewhat paltry, more characters are on the way.
In addition to the final two new characters, the final box art for the game was revealed along with a collectors edition that comes with an art book, soundtrack, in-game items for the mobile game, and a unique box with its own special artwork.
Granblue Fantasy Versus comes out on February 6th, 2020 in Japan for the Playstation 4. XSEED Games will be localizing the US version, although no release date for a Western release has been announced yet.
