The Way to Make an Anime like OreSuki Popular by Using Memes

There are many ways for an anime studio to make a new series popular with fans. They can work hard to craft a subtle story that deeply affects viewers with its beauty. They can create characters that inspire us to do better in sports or studies or life. Or they can hope that fans embrace their anime with memes, creating a pop-culture vortex that sucks in other fans and leads to popularity. That’s what seems to have happened with OreSuki, aka Ore o Suki nano wa Omae dake kayo?, or Are You Really the Only One Who Likes Me? which is a newly launched series in the current anime season.

Based on a light novel series, OreSuki is about a young man nicknamed Joro who receives “love confessions” from two girls, Cosmos and Himawari…only to find out that each girl is actually in love with his best friend, and they want to enlist his help in winning their romantic goal. Joro does finally receive a confession of love from another girl, named Pansy, but it happens to be a girl he loathes, a stalker with a dark personality and a penchant for reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It’s a really entertaining anime so far!
Fans on the Internet immediately noticed the visual similarity between Pansy and another character, Saki Yoshida from the infamous manga Metamorphosis (also titled as Emergence), which everyone seems to hate, yet no one can avoid reading. Metamorphosis/Emergence is dark hentai manga comic with a very depressing story that’s been called “The Citizen Kane of Hentai,” which has spawned memes like 177013, from its database entry on a popular adult manga site, or 265918, an alternate happy ending in which Jojo shows up to heal Saki with his Stand ability. While we’ve got Metamorphosis in stock if you want to see what all the fuss is about, obviously the manga isn’t for everyone, so use caution. (We also have a review of Metamorphosis on our blog.)
Of course, OreSuki has no connection to Metamorphosis at all, other than having a character who looks slightly similar. It looks to me like OreSuki will be a cleverly-done high school romance/comedy that subverts viewers’ expectations and has lots of twists and turns in the story. It has an excellent lineup of characters so far, and a high level of animation quality, too. I will certainly be watching every episode!
