Pixiv had a very slow start for an image hosting site. Although it was founded in 2007, other platforms such as DeviantArt, Instagram, and Tumblr saw a much faster take-off in comparison. Personally, I didn’t even know Pixiv existed until 2014. Having a predominantly Japanese user base and lack of English support might be the reason. However, in recent years, Pixiv has been home to several beloved slice-of-life manga that have since captured the hearts of Japan, as well as underground manga enthusiasts overseas. Such titles include Ojisama to Neko — the heart warming misadventures of an old man and his fat, ugly pet cat, as well as Goku Shufudo — a comedy series about an ex-yakuza member struggling to re-adapt to everyday life as a house husband after getting married.
Today, Pixiv has released a new comic titled「新しい上司はど天然」or My New Boss is Goofy by Ichikawa Dan with the first volume finally in stores. Until now, My New Boss is Goofy has been made available for free on Manga Cross and Pixiv Comics. The series is still on both sites, and being updated beyond the current six chapters.
What is this new manga about?
Plain and simple, it’s about an office worker named Momose who has started at a new company, only to be disturbed by his new boss, Shirasaki, who is surprisingly very relaxed and unprofessional in contrast to how he presents himself (pictured below). As boring at it sounds, if you’ve followed Pixiv Comic’s other slice-of-life series, then you can be sure to expect plenty of humor that pokes fun at everyday events. This includes buying the wrong medicine to help employee’s stomach problems, trying to pick up the attention of stray cats, and getting caught in rainstorms with broken umbrellas.
Much like other series released on the same platform, its simple concept holds enough charm and humor that it leaves the reader smiling, laughing, and feeling like there’s a touch of truth to it all.
The first volume of My Boss is Goofy has already received the nomination for the Next Manga Award 2019, as well as the WEB Manga General Election Award 2019.
A small promo video has been released to commemorate the award nominations, dubbing the first chapter of the manga. Chief Shirasaki is played by Takahiro Sakurai (Mob Psycho 101, Fruits Basket), and the role of Momose is played by Kotaro Nishiyama (Haikyu!!, All Out!!).
Right now, the series is only in Japanese, but with its growing popularity in Japan, an English localization, or at least a fan translation, could be seen in the near future.
