We all know that anime comes in many shapes and sizes, and that while it’s an awesome art form, not every anime should be recommended to people who are just starting out on their journey as fans. The other day I asked J-List’s Twitter followers to tell us which anime series their top anime not recommended for beginners, and we got some interesting results. Let’s look at them now!

The anime series that
- Serial Experiments Lain. A fantastic anime that explores a Cyberpunk-ey future of technology, raising all kinds of advanced questions. Perhaps not the best anime for a starting fan.
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, one of the most perfect anime ever made, structurally. The theme of the show is drills, and the story structured as a giant drill, but it might be too much for beginners?
- Elfin Lied. The darkest anime I’d seen at the time, and I had to take a break in the middle while watch it.
- Rosario + Vampire. An extremely ecchi show about a high school for monster girls, and a normal human who gets sent there by accident. It might not be the best show to start a new fan on.
- Goblin Slayer. The explosion in Western fantasy-influenced anime that started with Record of Lodoss War has been great, but this isn’t the best place to start, trust me.
- Higurashi When the Cry. Psychological horror meets Groundhog Day.
- Happy Sugar Life, a dark yandere love story similar to Mirai Nikki.
- Horror is a fun genre, but Another, the anime that makes you fear carrying umbrellas and riding in elevators, might be best to skip at first.
- While Madoka Magica might be an okay anime for newer fans who at least know the basic mechanics of magical girl shows, some offerings in this genre might not be good for early Magical Girl Site, or Magical Girl Raising Project.
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Any anime avante-garde enough to shows its episodes out of order on purpose, is just amazing. But would this be a good show for begginers?
- Kiss x Sis. The best fanservice anime ever, but not always a great place to start on a journey of anime, unless they’re already a pervert.
- Made in Abyss. Although it’s one of the best shows in recent anime, it’s got some dark spots that only advanced anime fans should try to tackle.
